Docket Number L-001169-07 in Monmouth Bauer et al v. Glatzer et al I happened on Wikipedia today and discovered a court case concerning the Barbara Bauer entry I fought so hard against. I knew she'd sue for defamation and sure enough that's the reason the article had been removed. I told them but they had to use WP for their fake agent platform. Of course they banned me over the affair at Making Light and long before at Absolutewrite. This was avoidable.

Lillian Doris Robbins 1914-2007

My longtime neighbor and good friend of my mother Lillian "Lil" Robbins has died. I've known her all of my life and two years ago took my dad to visit when I was home. She was very active and enjoyed living in her home on our street, Military Ave. in Fairfield, Maine. Her husband Harold was a hard drinking gregarious character, a former poultry inspector for the state and town council member. He died some time ago from smoking, among other things. She retired comfortably from Hathaway Shirt Co. now retired in its own right.

Like my own timeless mother, Norma Colburn, Mrs. Robbins still had a young girl's optimism and cheerfulness into her '90s. I don't think there's any question, as Tom Brokaw wrote, this is the greatest generation. They endured things we can't even imagine.

Why I'm Still Skeptical of Lomborg

Basically because he doesn't understand environmental science at all. His techniques are specious and succumb to a standard overgeneralization fallacy, and while they may pass in a social science paradigm they don't in a scientific one. My favorite quotes from his testimony to the Jay Inslee led congressional committee?

"I'm not a scientist."

And , "Global warming is real."

He argues the money is better spent on AIDS and malaria. Hello? Both are "Hot Zone" evolutionary creations.

I will link his defenses to criticism mostly by Scientific American Magazine which isn't environmentally extreme except by the most conservative political standards, which have the lowest bar imaginable to begin with. Lomborg passes that one.

And to address the forest issue, a patchwork of new industrial tree farms is not the same as a healthy old growth forest. The latter is fire resistant, while the former, also a Lomborigan indicator of environmental health, is kindling for the catasptrophic wild fires we've seen lately. Even a child can make this critical distinction, yet Lomborg can't. Is it the business school? Because it isn't science.

The Gore Hypocrisy Charge

Is false because one of the reasons Gore's electric bill is higher is because he buys green energy which costs more. In the future it won't, and in addition local building codes make solar construction more difficult. That will change too. Sen. Imhofe made a ridiculous spectacle of himself at the hearing. The man is stuck on stupid.

Update: Gore completely refuted the false sunspot theory proffered by Kit Bond as an either/or false analogy. Stratospheric cooling wouldn't be happening if the Sun was the cause. Well done. Tipper nodded in the background. They're both right.

Total Solar Irradiance hasn't gone up significantly in 50 years. Global warming has turned up sharply in the last 30.

More sunlight would heat the stratosphere. The stratosphere is cooling. Modelers predicted it would if greenhouse gases increased.

More sunlight would heat the equator more than the poles (Lambert's cosine law). Instead we see "polar amplification," also predicted by the modelers. The poles are heating faster than the equator.

A New Low in Science Journalsim

William Broad needs to take his place beside former New York Times co-author Judith Miller after today's hit piece on Al Gore, a sadly delusional false dilemma account. What a pitiful rendition of science writing. It has been said by K.C. Cole, the former science writer for the Los Angeles Times, that editors don't want anyone on staff smarter than they are, and as a group don't understand science, and thus resent a competent science writer. She didn't dare say this until she quit.

The Russell James York Award for Meritorious Service

I've just been informed by the 4th Engineer Battalion they are naming an award: The Russell James York Award for Meritorious Service and a room after him at Fort Carson, CO. In addition, I've submitted him for the Medal of Honor which would upgrade his Silver and Bronze Star medals. The whole thing is an incredible honor for me and my family. If it goes as planned, we'll be at the White House for the ceremony.

Journos Fail On Global Warming

That's what Oscar winner Al Gore says. He's right , but what would a question and answer hurt? The reporter left that Ostrich egg in the last line. The implication is he's got something to hide. He doesn't. Journalism fails again. It's what we're used to.
