Hatchet Job
Marc Cooper does the best job of shedding light on the Gary Webb suicide. The case is a classic example of smearing by newspapers beholden or oblivious to the government agencies they cover. It is still unclear to me exactly how close Webb got to the truth about crack-running Contras and a CIA relationship, but apparently there's more truth to it than Saddam and Al Qaeda which frankly doesn't set the bar very high.

Contras, CIA, drug money, the press. Do you enjoy reading? If so, take a look at Joan Didion's *Salvador*--she's a journalist/novelist seemingly beholden to no one, and her look at the "civil war" (and American involvement) in El Salvador is searing. If you like that, move on to her novel "Democracy."
People who recommend Joan Didion are not your friends.
Didion is excellent. Slouching Toward Bethlehem is on my to read list.
